William Souter circa 1851 - 1909
The death of Mr William Souter who passed away at Newnham Farm on Wednesday evening 18 August, at the age of 64. Mr Souter had been in failing health for some time but his end came as somewhat of a shock.
The deceased had carried on the trade of a millers business at Wootton Mill for nearly 40 years and also was a farmer in a large way, for which he was widely known and respected.
He took great interest in public work and was at the time of his death chairman of the school managers for the Wootton Council School. He was a member of the 1st County Council having been elected for the Binstead Division. He also held the post of chairman for North Arreton Parish Council and for a long period member of the old Highway Commission. He formerly served as overseer of North Arreton.
He was a large employer of labour and took kindly interest in the well being of people around him. His loss is felt by a wide circle of friends. Deep sympathy go to his widow and family.
The Funeral
The funeral took place on Monday 23rd at Havenstreet Churchyard. The service was preformed by Rev. Arthur Roberts (vicar of Havenstreet) and Rev. G L Davey (rector of Binstead). The church was filled with friends of the deceased. Hymns sung "Rock of ages", and "The strife is o'er".
The chief mourners were Messrs. L J Souter, E W Souter, W Souter, and J Souter (sons), A J Mew (son-in-law), W White (nephew), A Barton and W Barton (brothers-in-law). Employees of the Mill and farms were also present plus representatives of many organisations.
