Wellow

The manor of Wellow was held from Edward the Confessor by one Coolf, and from the Conquest onwards was granted by the Crown to various lords, including Hugh le Despenser who also held Thorley from Edward III. Between 1540 and 1629 the Dore family were in possession. After this the descent of the manor is uncertain.

A number of leases and similar records over a considerable period all mention specifically "right of footpath and way of wheelbarrow", possibly because the strip system of cultivation meant that the land worked by each individual was scattered about in strips in different parts of the open field, and it was necessary to have some access to them.

In the present-day village some 18th century dwellings remain. Two cottages and the Post Office, still thatched, were converted from a single barn at least 100 years ago.

Wellow Farm was once in the possession of Richard Walton- White, a relation of Izaak Walton.

The Wellow Literary Institute, endowed by a member of the White-Popham family, is still in existence.
