Nettlestone
The name of this village seems to have meant "the farm in the nut wood". At one time, probably due to a scribe's error in recording it, the initial letter was changed to "H", and the name became Hoteltone.
The descent of the manor, after it had been held from Edward the Confessor by Alric, is somewhat confused. It was held in two parts from the date of the Domesday survey until the end of the 12th century. The larger portion passed through the hands of the de Lisle and the Rogers families, and was bought by the Oglanders in 1592.
A descendant, Charity Oglander, carried the estate by marriage to the Holgates. Later on the manor was held by a family named Glynn, one of whom, by Royal Licence, took the name of Oglander.
