The Freshwater, Yarmouth and Newport Railway Company was formed in 1880. The first passenger train used the line on 20th July 1889. Carisbrooke was the first station on the journey from Newport. A cart track from the churchyard was the main access to the station. In 1906 Harry Pressley was the Station Master. The station was busy at the turn of the century but it was eventually down graded to a halt. The last train ran on 20th September 1953. All signs of the station have now disappeared.
Priory Pond with Priory Farmhouse in the background, 1907
In the trees to the right of the farmhouse can be seen the site of the Priory which was attached to the church and was one of the most important religious buildings on the island. It stood for over 300 years but in the mid 15th century fell into decay. The stones were used to build the present church tower, the churchyard wall and the farmhouse.
In the 1930's Colson Bros. were Motor Omnibus Proprietors based in Clatterford Road. Mr. Frederick Colson , the proprietor is pictured with, on the right Mr Bill Oxley the driver. The business was started in 1920. They ran a local bus service between Newport, Carisbrooke and Gunville and also arranged private coach parties anywhere on the island. They had four buses and a charabanc. The business was sold in 1939. No doubt there are many with fond memories of this personalised form of transport.
A view of a peaceful part of Carisbrooke. Do you know where it is? Some have suggested it is part of Froglands ... others that it is the Mill Pond ... some say it is in the fields beyond the church. Where do you think it is?
