Carisbrooke in Times Past

Clatterford Shute

The maps of the late 19th century show few buildings in this area. The most imposing building is Clatterford House. Mr. George Coombes was the owner in 1906. George Alfred Brannon was the 1931 resident. Since then there have been several changes of use, including a hotel. It is now The Shute Inn.

The Shute leads to yet another meeting - by ford - with Lukely Brook. The road then forks - the left, Millers Lane, eventually links with the bottom of Castle Street.

On the corner of Millers Lane is Clatterford Cottage owned at the turn of the century by James List.

Froglands

The right fork past the ford leads to Froglands Lane. Passing Frosthills one reaches Frogland's Farm owned in 1906 by Reuben Cheek.

The Lukely Brook rises further up the Bowcombe Valley. Beaucombe was a name given to it by the Normans - a pleasant valley. It was certainly a peaceful place, an area described as being of true rural beauty. The views of the castle from this direction were just as imposing.

Lukely Brook on its journey from the Bowcombe Valley to join the River Medina linked together many mills and mill ponds. It must have been nice to stand away from the noise of the mill and reflect by the tranquil pond.
