Carisbrooke in Times Past

The Castle Inn

As you enter the High Street there is a gradual incline towards the parish church which stands aloof from the busy world below.

The Castle Inn is shown on an 1852 map of the area. The full title was the Carisbrooke Castle Inn. In 1871 William Cantelo was the proprietor of the `Carisbrooke Castle Inn and tea rooms'. It was a regular halt for travellers as there was good stabling. From the Inn there was a clear view up to the castle.

The Red Lion and the Castle Head must have vied for trade. Now both have disappeared. The Red Lion has now become 'Fergies' whilst the Castle Hotel house the Spar shop. Further down the street were at one time a shoe and shoe repair shop and a butchers before you reached the Post Office. Nowadays the Castle View Café and Campions the Butchers ply for trade whilst the Post Office is a private dwelling.
