GOVERNOR AND LORD LIEUTENANT OF THE ISLE OF WIGHT ADMIRAL OF THE FLEET THE EARL MOUNTBATTEN OF BURMA, KG. PC. GCB. 0M. GCS1. GCIE. GCV0. DS0. F.R.S.
I am very glad to have the opportunity of writing a foreword to the Village Book compiled by the Isle of Wight Federation of Women's Institutes.
Having been so closely concerned with the Island for more than sixty years, I know the villages and fully appreciate the strength they give to the Island community as a whole.
The interesting historical and other notes about the villages will give much pleasure, and the Island owes a debt of gratitude to the Federation for compiling the volume, as well as for its many other efforts.

In presenting the Isle of Wight Village Book, I hope it will give lasting pleasure to all those who already know and love our Island, and to the many visitors who see our Island villages for the first time. I would like to express the sincere thanks and gratitude of the Isle of Wight Federation of Women's Institutes to all those who have helped in compiling this most interesting book, especially the following:-
The members of our Institutes and many friends who have provided information and illustrations;
The County Archivist and his assistants who have been most helpful in verifying historical details;
The members of the Committee, Hilda Evans, Sylvia Greville, Marjorie Middleton and Gwyn Symes, who have collected and arranged the information and illustrations, and compiled the book;
the photographer, G.L.Symes, who has taken endless time and trouble in finding unusual views and in photographing them;
the typists, who have prepared all the copy for the Press.
