The above clinic [blood test etc] in Swanmore Road, will close at 1.00pm until the 6th of April, this is due to staff sickness.

An alternative facility exists at St Mary’s Hospital, Newport, and this is normally open from 7.30am until 4.oopm, Monday to Friday [closed until 8.30am Wednesdays for staff training].

Farewell to Wightlink car ferry St Helen.

The car ferry which plied between Portsmouth and Fishbourne and carried a lot of holidaymakers and islanders, made its final journey last week after 32 years service in which it made 104,832 crossings of the Solent.

The car ferry has been sold to an Italian shipping company on the island of Sardinia in the Mediterranean and will join her sister ship from the same route St Catherine.

The car ferry was commissioned by the then British Rail for their subsidiary Sealink UK.Ltd and built at the Leith Yard of Henry Robb being launched on the 15th September 1983 and came into service at Portsmouth on the 28th November 1983.

Ploughing Match

A ploughing match will take place at New Wolverton Farm, Shorewell, Isle of Wight, on Sunday 12th April, directions to the event will be signposted from Shorwell Church.

Vintage and modern tractors will be ploughing alongside heavy horses.

Entrance to the event is free but any monies collected will be donated to island charities, the main beneficiary being the Earl Mountbatten Hospice.

Start time is 9.30am and the match will last until 4.30pm, refreshments will be available.


Events at the Methodist Church Station Road.

There are a number of events being held at the church over the next few weeks:-

Friday 27th April. Talk by Andy Gustar of Hamilton’s Butchers, Newport [event to include a chicken/bacon supper costing £5.50].

Monday 4th May. [Bank Holiday] Cowes Concert Band in concert with Andy Norman. Retiring collection.

Friday 17th May. Challenge and Adventure, a power point presentation by Karen Eales supper will be provided cost £5.50.

Free parking is available in the railway car park opposite.

Open day at Southampton

As part of the Southampton Science & Engineering Festival there is an Ocean and Earth Day being held at the National Oceanography Center, Waterfront Campus, European Way, Southampton,  SO14 3ZH.  [through Dock Gate 4] on Saturday 25th April 2015 10-30am until 4-00pm.

The exhibition will be of particular interest to any student on the island studying for university in this field.

Admission to the event is free, and refreshments will be available on the university campus.


Advance notice of a lecture

The Royal Aeronautical Society [Isle of Wight branch] are hoping to organize  another lecture at the Isle of Wight Technical College in May to follow the two recent very well attended meetings.

It is hoped that the speaker will be Spike Jepson a former leader of the Red Arrows display team.

Details will be published as soon as arrangements are finalized.

March lecture of the Isle of Wight Branch of the RAeS

This open meeting of the Royal Aeronautical Society will take place at the Isle of Wight Technical College in conference room on Thursday 26th March starting at 6.00pm.

The subject of the lecture will be career/life of a chief test pilot which was concluded as chief test pilot of Marshall Aerospace and will be given by Iain Young.

March lecture of the IET

The next and last of the season meetings of the institute will be held in the Sail Loft Room at the Bargeman’s Rest, Newport Quay on Thursday 26th March, the subject will be;-

Modern Medical Imaging; getting the right treatment to the right patient” and will be given by Dr. Martin Christlieb, Department of Oncology, University of Oxford.

Start time will be 7.30.PM.
