Lieut. Commander Graham Fulljames 1900 - 1998

Born in Portsmouth at the beginning of the 20th century, he served in the Royal Flying Corps during the First World War. He also captained Portsmouth Rugby Club and was a member of Southsea Rowing Club.

He twice rowed around Isle of Wight in skiff and at the outbreak of the Second World War joined the Royal Navy as a Lieutenant Commander serving in supply ships all over the world, he was also involved in the ‘D’ day landings. During the war the family ran the Spithead Hotel, Bembridge, and on the Commander’s return to the island they moved to the Reith Hotel in Niton.

Moving to Wootton in 1953 he bought Wootton Grange in New Road, and in 1961 acquired the holiday complex of Lakeside, which was located by the Millpond renaming it Lakeside Inn. At the end of the 1960’s & early 70’s children and residents of the village were allowed to use the camp facilities free and many still remember swimming in the pool. He was involved with the local branch of the Royal British Legion during his time in the village.
