We have developed this part of the web site to reflect the diversity of the business within the village. Though small in number those that do exist are quite vibrant.

The village caters for both the businessman and the holidaymaker with a four star hotel and restaurant, a caravan and camping site together with several bed and breakfast places. The village has several inns offering food and refreshments and there are two take-away shops offering food for the passing trade.

As part of our aim to preserve historic information and as a result of requests from a number of people we have decided to create a separate section within the web site devoted to the collection and display of old cookery recipes.

Several years ago I came across an old recipe book of my mother’s stretching back to 1920, several people suggest that I publish the contents in book form, it never got done, now this historical web site is an ideal medium in which to publish and preserve the information.

  • Thumbnail of Diary website

Mary Denham was born on Saturday, 30th July 1836. She lived all of her life either in Wootton Common or Newport, in the Isle of Wight. Time, developers and the County Council have swept away all the physical traces of her life. Indeed, we might never have remembered her but for one piece of her life that has survived, her diary.

The diary was found in a bookshop in Norfolk, some time ago, and was given to Mr. Ken Morris who lives in Wootton Bridge. How it came to be in Norfolk is unknown.

The Isle of Wight Rifles were also known as the "8th (territorial) Battalion The Hampshire Regiment, Princess Beatrice's Isle of Wight Rifles", or informally "The Isle of Wight Rifles". They also gained the Nickname "The Isle of Wight Gurkhas" due to a similarity in Rifles uniform and drill, and possibly because they tended to be shorter than the average height of the time.

The Isle of Wight had long been fortified against invasion, due to its strategic position. It had also had numerous troops billeted in the Napoleonic Wars.
